Israel will provide $1.3 billion in financing for U.N.-Israel-related medical benefits, Health Minister Yaakov Amidror said Friday, in a statement that also said Israel will be the first country in the world to provide health insurance for Israeli residents.
The $1-billion program is part of a broader package that will provide health care services to more than 40 million Israelis in need of medical care, according to a statement released by the minister.
Israel has been providing medical care to more Palestinians than any other country in Israel.
In 2016, it provided about 10 million Palestinian residents of Israel with medical care and $1,400 per month in food aid.
In addition to the $1bn, Israel will contribute $750 million for research and development.
It is expected to provide another $250 million in humanitarian aid, and another $500 million in non-medical services.
Israel currently spends about $500 billion on health care annually, according a report by the Israeli Center for Economic and Policy Research.
